The Port of Tilbury Proposals Don’t Add Up.
Tilbury's Road Infrastructure Cannot Cope

(Port of Tilbury Proposals)

The yellow area (A) shows the proposed lorry park

I personally welcome any progress that would make Tilbury and Thurrock a better place to live, but, not at any cost.
I visited the Port of Tilbury’s exhibition at the Tilbury Cruise Terminal on the 30th March 2010 regarding the Port of Tilbury’s attempts to bulldoze through planning permissions to expand the port of Tilbury’s foot print that would not benefit the people of Thurrock that they are suggesting.

The Port of Tilbury’s plans that they are proposing would be built on flood plains and marsh land alongside the Tilbury Asda roundabout, the proposals show massive new warehouses and new business premises, the plans also show and a new lorry park that would accommodate 600 to700 hundred HGV trucks from all over Thurrock, all of the hundreds of new HGV traffic movements would be expected to use the one new proposed new road exit on the existing inadequate Asda roundabout in Tilbury.

Yes Thurrock does need a lorry park; however, any new lorry park must be sited away from residential areas and nearer to the A13 & M25.

Tilbury’s roads infrastructure cannot cope with any extra volume of traffic.

I object to the Port of Tilbury’s new expansion proposals

Closes its doors.

Last Order's Please.
It is understood that the last remaining public house in Civic Square Tilbury has had to close its doors due to its operating licence being suspended due to various trouble and incidents within or around the Pub throughout the last year - 2009

Update - 28/05/2010
I have been informed that the Civic Square Public house is now going to be used for sunday school or church.

When will the this disgusting Graffiti mess be cleaned up?

Don't Blink Or You Will Miss The Change's.
These page's are all about the change's that are taking place in around Thurrock, however more concentration will be about Tilbury and the local surrounding area's

Together We can All Make A Difference.
This page has been dedicated to Tilbury, it is very important that Tilbury residents are aware of the changes that are taking place in Tilbury, and hopefully Tilbury People will be able to participate and put some influence on some of the planned infrastructure changes that Thurrock Council or the Thames Gateway have got planned for the Tilbury area.

Are The Tilbury People Playing Second Fiddle?
Did you know that some parts of Thurrock have had blue recycle bins for over two years, why was Tilbury not selected to be the first area to have this improved recycling facility!

Its now time for the Tilbury residents to Stand up and be counted

Pedestrian Crossing

Tilbury - Earmarked For Hundreds Of New Property's To Be Built.
Tilbury is already seeing the fast changes taking place regarding the the hundreds of flats and houses that have been built over the last couple of years, and the Universal Tyre Company in Calcutta Road moving to the industrial park behind the Asda complex due to their site being purchased by developers to build more flats.

All Road Users Must Fit Into The Building Developers Plans.
When permission was granted for the new property to be built on the old Tute Working mans club site, why was the developer not required to donate funds for a Safe pedestrian crossing for St Mary's Catholic School opposite?

Tilbury Shoppers Demand
Three New Pedestrian
Crossings

Walmart - Asda Could Have Donated Funds For The Three Crossings.
Now Redrow Homes has applied for permission to build more property's on land adjacent to the A1089 (The Dock Road Approach road)

Are The Thames Gateway Planners Putting The Horse Before The Cart?
Thurrock Council MUST make sure that the appropriate infrastructure is in place for all concerned before allowing developers to move forward, or is Thurrock Council going to make the same mistakes it made 25 years ago, see below.

Tilbury residents take their live's everyday trying to cross the busy A1089 and St Andrews Road to gain access to the Asda complex.

Where Is The Safe Planned Road Crossings For Pedestrians?

Asda (Walmart) Tilbury was built over 25 years ago, why were there and no plans ever put in place for a Pedestrian crossings for the local Tilbury folk who shop at Asda?

Developers and Industry Must Share Road Safety Responsibility.
Lets hope that Thurrock Council takes on board the short comings that have slipped through the net in the past, and hopefully get everything put in place on all plans before allowing any developers planning permission in the future.

Thurrock Council will have to extra vigilant now the Thames Gateway have got their finger in the pie!

Who Are They Kidding

Redrow Homes Believes Tilbury Could Have A Bright Future -30/7/07

How Many Council Houses Will Be Built Within The Plans?
By now Tilbury residents should have had a nice glossy leaflet drop through their letter box informing everybody that Redrow Homes wants to build houses and other facilities on some of the fields (Green Belt land) adjacent to the Dock approach road, and to the east towards the New Academy College being built at present

Click the image to enlarge

Will Tilbury Dock's
Survive ?

Who Are Redrow Housing Development Trying To kid!
They are also informing us that the Dock and surrounding area's will result in the creation of 13,000 to 16,000 new jobs in the area!!

Where will these magic New jobs come from?
How many jobs will be required to man a couple of shops?
The only extra few jobs that I foresee would be the building contractor's and they will all disappear when the building work is finished!

Shell Havens New Container Complex.
I anticipate that a lot of business in Tilbury Dock's will transfer to the massive new shell haven Container complex that will have the deep-berth jetty facilities, and will be able to cater for some of the biggest Panamax Container Carriers in the World.

Tilbury Must Be Prepared For The Changes Ahead.
However, Tilbury must look forwards and be able to plan and adapt to these foreseen changes

Tesco
Opens In Tilbury

One Of Tilbury's Little Old Churches' In Calcutta Road Disappears.
One of Tilbury's old landmarks disappears forever, the church opposite Ottawa Road has gone and has been replaced with a very welcome new
Tesco's supermarket.

Click the image to enlarge

Is Religion A Dwindling Practice?
I think the congregation must have dwindled to a level that made the church to expensive to keep open and maintain, did you attend the little old church?

Voting that used to take place in the Church hall at national and local elections has moved to the old Fire Station in Civic Square.

Has anybody got any pictures of the old Tilbury

Where Has The Old
Horse Drinking Troth Gone?

My Memories Of The Journey To Our School In Tilbury.
My family had moved down from London to south stifford near Grays in the 50's, my older brother and I attended St Mary's Roman Catholic school in Tilbury and every day we made the journey to school by walking to Gray's station via church path.

Tilbury Town Broadway - Once Had Underground Toilets (Take Note Thurrock Council)
At Grays we then boarded the old smelly steam train to Tilbury Town station.
From Tilbury Town Station my brother and I had to walk from the then very busy Tilbury Broadway that was at that time still buzzing with hundreds of Tilbury Docker's milling around the many cafe's or using the underground Public Toilets before they were about to go to work.

Click the image to enlarge

Skinners Garage & Jack Alan's Taxi's No Longer To Be Seen.
From the Broadway we passed Skinners Garage with all the new old car's like the Morris Minor that were outside on display, Jack Alan and Bumble Girts Taxi's were always on call, moving along the road we pass the old Horse Trough that used to be sited at the junction of Calcutta and Dock Road, it has now been found I'm told at the bottom of Chadwell Hill, moving along we come to the old RSPCA shop that was located in Dock road next to the old post office. a block of flats is sited where the RSPCA shop used to stand, the three story building in the picture was the old post office, it was last used as an Antique shop and then a guest house.

Click the image to enlarge
The picture to the right above shows the old building
Boarded up ready for demolition

UPDATE.
The old post office has seen many changes in it's time, when it first closed it became Mr O'Rouke's Antique shop, after a few years the antique shop closed its doors for the final time and it then became a guest house for weary traveler's that visited or moved into Tilbury.

Sadly the building has had its final makeover and in November 2008 the old building can be viewed all boarded up awaiting it's demolition for more flat's or houses I imagine

Can Anybody Remember The Old Post Office In Dock Road Tilbury in The 50's?

For Sale

The Other Building In Calcutta Road Is Up For Sale!
The other old Post Office that is part of the old telephone exchange in Calcutta road Tilbury that was located opposite the old Tute workingman's club is also up for sale.

Click the image to enlarge

I think the property will have to be converted rather than be pulled down due to the telephone exchange still being part of the structured building and is still being used by BT.

Sold

The Old Tilbury Job Centre In Calcutta Road.
Long before the so called Credit Crunch Tilbury's Job centre in Calcutta road closed its doors to the Tilbury Jobless for the last time, now Tilbury's unemployed have to
make an unnecessary expensive journey to Grays to sign on and hopefully for them obtain new employment.

The Old Tilbury Police Station Dock Road Tilbury Is Now The (NSPCC) Office.
How many Tilbury residents remember the Old Police station that was located in Dock Road, Tilbury, next to the Stella Maris?

Click the image to enlarge

I suspect many a drunken Seaman spent a cold night in the Police Cells, and the Cell's bared window's can still be seen on the side of the building.

The Tilbury Docks
Threat

Tilbury Docks Shipping Adapts To New Technology.
The fast changing technology that the way ships have adapted to Bulk handling Containers did not only see a diminishing work force in Tilbury Dock, it also reduced the number of ships that had to carry cargo to Tilbury.

Will The New Container Port At Shell Haven Will Reduce The Tilbury Docks Work Force Again?
By using fast turn around large Container ship's meant that ship's were only berthed in Tilbury docks for approx 24 hours, in the past ships would be in Tilbury for two to three weeks when docker's work very hard and had to discharge every ship cargos by hand, this would include single cases of Tea or single carcases of lambs for example

Click the image to enlarge

The Old Seaman's Mission Is Now Residential Flats.
The reduction in shipping that visits Tilbury has also played a part in lost business for many Tilbury Company's, including Taxi's, Public houses, and also the Stella Maris Seaman's Hostel that catered fro Seafarers visits, and also provide accommodation and entertainment for their normally long stays.

The image above demonstrates how changes have taken place.

No More Dabbing
On Here

The Old Tute Working Mans Club Is NO More.

The Calcutta Road Workingmen's Club (Tute) Has Disappeared.
The face of Tilbury moved up a gear when the old Tute Workingmen's club that was located in Calcutta road Tilbury was domolitioned in March 2006.

Click the image to enlarge

Tilbury Docker's Favorite Drinking Hole.
The Tute was a favorite drinking hole for many Tilbury Docker's, it was where many docker's stood outside waiting to dab on (to get picked) by the Ganger for a days work, the club was also a venue used by the big trade Unions during the big dock strike, there wasn't many weeks went by with a good arguments or the odd fight taking place inside the premises.

Maggie Thatchers Sorts Out And Crushes The Big Unions.
W
hen Tilbury docks went into decline, so did the club, it was a sad day when the doors closed for the last time, Children and the local Pensioners could no longer look forwards to the yearly outing to Walton on the Naze or Clacton.

For many years after the club stood empty before vandals set fire to it on several occasions, this resulted the building becoming unstable and dangerous and it wa ten boarded up for safety.

The Roof Goes On.
The new buildings that are being erected on the site of the old Tute Working mans club is really starting to take shape.

The last picture of the Care Home that has been erected on the foot print of the old Tute club house was taken in November 2008

Is Tilbury's Infrastructure Being Left Behind?
Buildings are going up fast, but what about Tilbury's neglected requirement's!
Tilbury needs more schools and Doctors!

Thurrock's New Academy College - Opens Update -20/10/2008.
The Tilbury Academy is a welcome asset to Tilbury and Thurrock, and the road infrastructure within the Academy has been well thought out and is a great asset to advancing road safety and the local Thurrock infrastructure
