Thurrock
Council Must Act Now.
If Thurrock Council really has our interest in road safety
to heart they should take a leaf out of the Highways agency's
book regarding the correct information road sign that
should be in place approaching the Asda roundabout from
Tilbury.
Road
Sign Gives Incorrect Information.
The road sign shown on the right is in place at
this present moment in time and is giving all road users
the wrong information regarding the safest route to take
on the roundabout if you are intending to go from Tilbury
to the A13, M25 or Grays.
The Council Breaks Our Agreement.
It was agreed by the Highways Engineer Mr Peter Tilbury
who was the Highways department Engineer at Thurrock Council
in 1998 that the road sign in place at present moment
in time is giving out the wrong information.
Council Letter Of the Agreement. (Click
Here)
The Council has slightly changed the letter from what
was agreed at the Meeting with me.
And there is no mention of the tempory plates that was
agreed to overcome the present problem!
How
The Road Sign Should Be Amended.
It was suggested by Mr Tilbury that having two
plates made up, one to cover up the wrong direction, and
the other plate showing the correct direction could solve
the problem tempory, and a new sign would be put in place
when maintenance takes place.
Update (September 2006) We Are
Still Waiting.
The road sign to the right is how the road sign would
look when it has been amended.
Many Accidents Have taken Place On This Roundabout.
Could the incorrect information being given out
on the road sign at the top of the page to the right be
responsible for any of the accidents that have taken place
on this roundabout?
 Highways
Agency (contractors) Set An Example.
The Highways Agency's contractors working on the A1089
(Dock approach road) over the period November to December
2004 to correct the flooding problems had no trouble in
displaying the correct information sign regarding Tilbury
to the A13 as the photo to the right shows.
New Road Signs For Old
The Highways agency has now completed all
of the work on the A1089 Dock approach road, and in doing
so they replaced all of the road signs in the area they
were working on in November and December 2004.
The
new green road sign to the right shows Tilbury as a left
turn as you approach the roundabout from London.
The Facts.
It goes without saying, when driving out of Tilbury
with the intension of going to Grays or London, the manoeuvre
is a right turn.
The Embarrassing Council Letter.
I asked an engineer at Thurrock Highways department
what the right hand lane on approach to the Asda roundabout
should be used for.
Their answer contained within the letter has had many
professional drivers falling about with laughter, and
I thought is was about time I shared the joke with everybody
else.(Click

The Highway Code Rules (Page
44, Rule 162.)
When taking the last exit or going full circle:
Signal right and approach in the right hand lane, keep
to the right on the roundabout until you need to change
lanes to exit the roundabout.
Signal left after you have passed the exit before the
one you want.
Going Ahead (Normal Driving)
When normal driving and intending
to go ahead, always use the left hand lane on approach
and through the roundabout unless it is blocked, in this
case use the most appropriate lane.
The Break In The Circle.
The break in the circle on the roundabout leader
board determs the last exit.
The
Ordinance Survey Map Proves The Point.
On the ordinance map, St Andrews road is shown
as ahead to the A1089, leaving Tilbury to the A1089 as
a right turn as agreed in the letter.
